The Spirit of Messiah Existed Before Creation
When HaShem planned the universe, the first thought that arose in His ''Mind'' was the soul of the Messiah. This ''spirit'' wasn't just a later addition; it was woven into the blueprint of creation itself. Creation exists for the sake of the Messiah's mission: to bring Tikkun Olam (repair, restoration) to a broken world.
In Zohar (Part II, 115b) it says:
"Before the world was created, the Holy One, blessed be He, formed the image of the Messiah in the upper realms, and it was hidden in His mind.''
Also, in Midrash (Bereshit Rabbah 1:4), it hints:
"The Messiah's name was one of the things created before the world was created.''
Why would the Messiah exist before the world? Because the very purpose of creation is to lead to redemption.
The Messiah's spirit carries the power to heal what will be broken. The Messiah's soul knows the sorrows of the world even before they happen. In mystical terms, the Messiah is called the ''Light hidden away'' (Or Ganuz) from the beginning.
Proverbs 8:22-31, where Wisdom says she was ''brought forth before the foundations of the earth.'' Isaiah 53, where the ''suffering servant'' knows pain and carries healing even before people recognize Him.
When John says, ''In the beginning was the Word'' (John 1:1), he is echoing this ancient mystical idea. Yeshua's Spirit was already present with God, waiting, preparing, woven into the cosmos. Yeshua wasn't a ''Plan B'' he was the deep intention from the start. In a way, the Spirit of the Messiah is like the heart of creation itself.
In Jewish thought, ''The Word of God'' (דבר יהוה, D'var Adonai) was the power of God that created everything. (Genesis 1 - ''And God said... and it was so.'')
So, when John says ''Yeshua is the Word of God,'' he means Yeshua is the ultimate expression of God's mind and heart. He is the living Word, not just a messenger, but God's own creative, saving power in person. He was with God (intimate relationship). He was God (sharing God's very nature, but still distinct as the ''Son'').
In the beginning, God's Word spoke everything into existence. That same divine Word became flesh (John 1:14, ''The Word became flesh and dwelt among us''). Yeshua is the visible, tangible reality of the invisible God's purpose, wisdom, and love.
We can look at the word Memra, an Aramaic word used in the ancient Targums (Jewish commentaries), meaning ''The Word'' as God's personal manifestation. Or Wisdom (Chokhmah), Proverbs 8 describes Wisdom being with God at creation, almost like a partner or agent. John is telling Jewish and Greek readers: That eternal Wisdom, that Memra you know from Torah, He has become human in Yeshua.
Yeshua as the Word of God means He is the perfect living revelation of God, God's Word, Wisdom, and Presence made flesh.
